The general theory of relativity marked the history of science by explaining that everything perceived as the force of gravity by the human senses is in fact, caused by a curvature in the space-time fabric. This curvature is also directly linked to energy and matter through the harmonization between Newton’s law of universal gravitation and Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity in the work General Relativity, which was published by Einstein in 1915. The reason why this was ground-breaking for scientific thought was because it is a historical evolution with regards to what time, space, matter and energy are conceptualized in physics. The evolution is depicted through a transition between three phases: The Aristotelian view, the Newtonian view and Einstein’s view. The first is characterized by a singular view on four elements, meaning that they were not connected to one another and thus independent. The second is characterized by a connection between time and space and a connection between energy and matter. However, both dualities are independent to one another and share nothing in common. In the third, the four variables are all connected to each other and form one given that they coexist. In sum, the transition went from four variables being independent to four variables being dependent on one another, which is the reason why the theory of general relativity is one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments.
Since the general theory of relativity combines time, space, energy and matter into one, I did not want to simply portray it with a diagram but rather illustrate it with a symbol and also portray the historical background. Therefore, I chose to draw a robotic mechanism that is symbolic of scientific and technological innovations, and how the robot’s existence is dependent on a harmonization between space, time, energy and matter. The robot I chose to draw is from a televised series named Power Rangers because it acts as a product of a fusion between four elements which are present in one of the 4 main body parts used in battle, namely the two arms and the two legs. I chose to draw a robot because it is not only symbolic for the connection of the four variables but also because it represents an evolution in scientific thought. The robot essentially has a red body. However, the arm representing energy is yellow for the conventional color used in the thunder bolt logo, which is on the arm. In addition, the arm representing matter is white and pink since the atom which is symbolic for matter is typically known for having a nucleus which has a variant of red as a color. The two legs representing space and time also have distinct colors, the former being teal blue and the latter being orange. The teal blue leg has a ruler as a symbol to depict that which can be measured. The orange leg has the symbol of a clock since it is associated to time and wood is normally used in the body of a clock.
I chose to call the work GTR-15 because it is similar to the name for a weapon, and it fits into the context of the Great War where science played a major role in the creation of assault rifles and other weaponry. The robot is the GTR-15 since it physically embodies the General Theory of Relativity which was born, or rather created in 1915. The background is all back since it illustrates the scientific innovation that was born in a time of darkness and death. Nevertheless, the picture shows how great minds continue to work for the progress of science even when their lives are in danger and humanity is in a chaotic period.
