The brain is the central component which creates the start of our knowledge. The two hemispheres of the brain reflect our different perspectives. The left hemisphere is rational, scientific and analytical. It is the side which utilizes the facts and creates a precise perspective on observations and thought processes. The right hemisphere is creative, spiritual and philosophical. This side focuses primarily on the abstract and imaginative ideas which our emotions express.
The symbols used in the painting reflect the concepts covered in the evolution of science. In the left part we see the beginning of discoveries in physics with the electromagnetic waves and the concept of wave-particle duality. Between the two, Einstein’s general theory of relativity is depicted with the globe and brain moving around its mass. In the middle we see Schrödinger’s cat both dead and alive as a representation of the wave particle duality, where we don’t know the true nature of one thing until we observe it. We also see waves of light, another discovery which evolved the scientific revolution. We then see a light bulb which represents the discovery of electricity as well as the ‘aha’ moment various scientists have encountered during their research and discoveries. Finally the magnifying glass represents the visually analytical nature of the left hemisphere’s perspective.
The right part of the brain begins with a fire and a flower which depict the spirituality and abstract idea of oneness with nature. The spiritual world is comprehended by this side, and questioned. Then we see music and art which are the creative works associated to this side as well. The cloud formation and eye represent dreams and the visual correspondence to them. The fist and heart represent emotions we sense and show through our perspectives. The pencil is the tool used for literature and the freedom of expression. Finally the head with a question mark is the philosophical thoughts we analyze, the concepts we discover and try to understand and the questions to which we haven’t found answers yet.
Science is a form of art which uses the concepts of both sides of the brain to depict both the specific and abstract ideas of our discoveries. Science and art will always go hand in hand because they both allow for creativity and the discovery of creating something new.
