My art and science project is a model of a small spa. It is composed of two Jacuzzis made out of plastic, foam board and clay. Both Jacuzzis have people in it made out of modeling clay as well as blue ponpons that represent water molecules. However, one Jacuzzi contains more people than the other one.
The purpose of my project is represented by this main idea. This main idea is based on the boiling point. An important characteristic of boiling point is that as the concentration of solute increases in a solvent, the boiling point of the solution increases as well. This is represented in the number of people in each Jacuzzi as well as in the conversation between the two individuals. The Jacuzzi with lot of people has a higher temperature than the Jacuzzi with fewer people. My art project is composed of six big ideas found in chemistry. Each and every one of them is elaborated upon this rationale.
The first big idea of chemistry is "Matter is atomic". For example, the floor, the base of my model, is composed of matter, which in turn in composed of many atoms. The matter of the floor can be different, such as wood, tiles or concrete. Each of these elements is composed of atoms as well. The water in the Jacuzzi is also composed of atoms, namely hydrogen and oxygen. Plus, the Jacuzzi itself is made of matter like ceramic, tiles or metal. Once again, all of these elements are made of atoms. Hence, all matter on Earth is composed of atoms that are imperceptible to the human eye.
The third big idea of chemistry that is included in my artwork is "Chemical bonds". Chemical bonds are bonds that are within a molecule. For example, water molecules are composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. These atoms are held together by polar covalent bonding. I have represented the water molecules inside the Jacuzzis with ponpons glued together. Since water is a molecule, chemical bonds exist between the ponpons, which represents oxygen and hydrogen.
The fourth big idea of chemistry included in my project is "Molecular shape". Molecular shape can be observed in water inside the Jacuzzi. I used the space-filling model to represent H2O molecules. I have represented the water molecules with two different colors of ponpons. The dark blue ponpons represent hydrogen atoms and the light blue ponpons represent oxygen atom. Two dark blue ponpons and one light blue ponpon are glued together to represent the molecular shape of water. It is also glued in a triangular shape, since the molecular geometry of H2O is bent. Molecular shape varies from one molecule to another due to various reasons: they differ in their composition of atoms, the sizes of atoms differ from one element to another and unshared electrons can also affect the shape.
The fifth big idea of chemistry is "Intermolecular forces". I tried showing intermolecular forces between the people and the water molecules. The solute in water is represented by the boys and the girls in the tub. Usually, the solute such as NaCl, dissociates in water into two ions, Na+ and Cl-. The boys in the tub are Cl- and the girls are Na+. Since the solute dissociates into positive and negative ions, water molecules tend to attract and repel to these two ions. The H2O molecule has electrons that are shared unequally due to electronegativity. Hence, the molecule has partial charges on different surfaces. The oxygen atom has a partial negative charge and it attracts to Na+. The hydrogen atom has partial positive charge and they attract to Cl-. I showed this attraction in the water by placing the H2O molecules in a way that the oxygen atom is closer to girls, and the hydrogen atoms are closer to the boys. Also, since there are is "solute" in one of the Jacuzzis, more water molecules are surrounding the people.
The sixth big idea found in my artwork is "Conservation of energy". According to the boiling point concept, if there is more solute in a solvent, the boiling point must increase. To increase the boiling point, energy is needed. As Lavoisier said, "In nature, nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed." In my case, the energy in the Jacuzzi is transformed into heat. Also, this heat is higher in the tub with lot of people, since the boiling point is increasing.
At last, the final big idea found in my project is "Entropy". Once again, entropy can be observed inside both tubs. Entropy is the tendency to mix in a disorder manner. In both tubs, water and NaCl mix together and disperse randomly. Entropy increases since two different substances are put together. The state of the solution can also affect entropy. The water in the tub is in liquid state. Entropy is greater in a liquid state than in a solid state because there is more disorder in liquids.
