My art and science project is painting done in the style of pop art. As is the style of pop art, the painting is of the batman logo four times, each in a different color, and has been painted on a canvas. Within each square with the batman logo are small waves and dots (particles). I drew mainly on the theory of wave-particle duality of light for this project, and the idea of the illusion and how it is more than one thing at a time, just as light is both a particle and a wave.
The four sections of my painting have been painted with two different colors per section, never having the same shade repeated in the painting. My color choices were taken based on the color wheel, and what colors were complimentary. I used mainly the brightest colors off of this, for the sole purpose of the having colors that would catch people's eyes. These colors were made to contrast each other perfectly to not only catch one's eye but to make each element of the painting stand out on its own. These elements are the batman logo itself, which is an illusion, and the waves and particles, which are the same color as one other but the opposite color as the background. However, the purpose of using different colors in each section refers to how science is always changing, dramatically; as depicted with the many different colors, and the small changes in science that occur all the time; depicted by the many different shades.
The painting is essentially demonstrating how light, such as the batman logo shined in the sky, is not only a wave but a particle as well. Light is both a wave and particle, and this is demonstrated in my painting with the waves (at the bottom of the logo) and the particles (at the top) in each rectangle Wave-particle duality of light was first proposed by Albert Einstein, and was a part of quantum theory. However, Isaac Newton had different views on the subject before Einstein changed science forever. Newton saw space as absolute and time was also absolute and constant, and neither affected the other. This is reflected in my painting in how the picture is repeated four times, exactly the same as one another; however these pictures do not affect one another in anyway. Newton, along with Descartes and Aristotle had a classical view, which was the world outside you was not affected by you; each section is not affected by another one in the painting. For these three men, this was purely common sense.
Quantum theory is known for defying common sense. An illusion is the distortion of the senses. So like quantum theory, illusions defy common sense. The batman logo is an illusion, it can be seen in two different ways, the bat in the center, or as part surrounding the bat is a mouth. The batman logo, as an illusion defies common sense, it doesn't appear the same to everyone and sometimes it doesn't appear as you believe or know it should, just like quantum theory. I chose to use this illusion of the batman logo, not only because it demonstrates this point. An illusion is not only the distortion of the senses, but in this specific case is two things at once, the bat and the mouth. This then refers back to how light is not only a wave but a particle as well; it is more than one thing.
Overall I really drew on wave-particle duality and quantum theory, with the idea of illusions, for inspiration for my art and science project. I am very pleased with how it turned out in the end. My project really depicts how science has changed from Isaac Newton and his classical views to the modern views of Albert Einstein which is hidden within the painting. The more obvious subject within my painting is wave-particle duality, and the idea of perception as depicted by the illusion that is the batman logo. As well as how wave-particle duality of light is more than one thing, just like an illusion.
