Different perspectives change the way one understands and conceptualizes the natural world. Ultimately, quantum changed the way humankind viewed the world because it goes against common sense. Primarily, the idea of the wave particle duality was a shocking discovery because it was realized that by simply observing, the nature of certain properties are subject to change. Also, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle shows that the position of a particle cannot be predicted or calculated as it was thought to be done in a Newtonian world where everything was continuous. These features of quantum mechanics go against common sense because we can no longer see the totality of things.
Changes in perspectives from the Newtonian world view to the new quantized world view is necessary in order to accept the reality of the natural world that is a place where nothing can be pre-determined or certain in its reality. The challenge is whether or not humanity is ready to change the way we view the world and realize that there are many things about our universe that are still unknown. I believe that we must realize that the chaotic and uncertain aspects of nature that are being discovered in science today is a normal feature of the universe.
Not only is science demonstrating the bizarre nature of the physical world, but there is a connection between the chaotic and uncertain aspects of science to that of human life. Physically, humans can never be compared alike and internally, humans are by far most diverse and unpredictable in terms of behavior, thoughts and emotions. As humans age, they way in which we begin to behave, think and feel change. Furthermore, not only are the physical and internal aspects of a human being subject to constant change, but the way an individual lives their life can be viewed as unstructured and unpredictable as well. One's future can never be predicted and life events unfold miraculously. Therefore, it can be viewed that the notion of uncertainty is shared between the universe and human life as well. Discoveries in quantum goes against the common sense that was held in a Newtonian world, but I shall argue that these recent discoveries should be viewed as normal aspects of the universe; one that is filled with mystery and unexplainable natural phenomenon.
With these themes in mind, my artwork illustrates the idea of an interconnectedness in nature as well as the fluid and unconventional reality of our universe. Primarily, there is no frame around the artwork nor does the artwork have any structured setting illustrating the phenomena of the expanding universe. In the middle of the canvas there is an ambiguous and abstruse figure; a visual integration of human, animal and environmental characteristics to emphasize the unity of existence within the self and the world we live in. For example, the figure has a combination of features; some of elephant, giraffe, and tree and is part of the ocean and earth as well. The face of the figure is abstract and lacks structure illustrating the idea that we cannot tell what we are looking at which is a similar aspect in quantum where electrons jump to all quantum states. Essentially, the entire artwork is a fluid blend of colors and different forms of life demonstrating the idea that nothing can be clearly distinguished within the natural world.
Furthermore, the eye that the figure is holding is a representation of the observer in quantum which can change the properties of matter. What's more is that the eye is looking down at only one side of the world that is black and white. However, on the opposite side of the canvas there is the other half of the world that is in greyscale which the figure does not see. In fact, it's entire body is facing the world that is black and white. This imbalance in terms of where the focus is on the canvas demonstrates the idea that humanity has not yet begun to view the world as a place filled with uncertain and undetermined realities nor has that reality been accepted as similar to the qualities of the human condition.
My art project has to do with the idea that the way in which we view the world needs to come to terms to what we are discovering and are continuing to explore in science today. We are crossing certain barriers and realizing that our original and conservative Newtonian perspectives on the universe need to adapt to ground breaking modern ideas in science, specifically what has been discovered in the quantum theory concerning wave particle duality. Furthermore, the goal of my project is to demonstrate that the way in which we are viewing and understanding the world and ourselves must change because we live in an interconnected universe with fluid and unpredictable changes and adaptations. Scientific discoveries today are not only disclosing new information about the world we live in but establishing some insight on human life as well.
