The objective of my art & science project was show a representation of the wave and particle duality concept. An electron has the ability to act as a particle or a wave. This theory originated from the double slit experiment. When aiming particles through two slits, it results in two lines. When a wave goes through two slits, an inference pattern is created. Quantum goes against these results at the molecular scale. Electrons are the smallest part of an atom and have a mass which classifies them as particles. When shooting electrons particles through the double slit, the obtained result is an inference pattern just like a wave. If we add an observer to study the behaviour of the electron and try to explain why they may be acting as waves, they go back to acting like particle and create two lines. The electrons changed their behaviour as if they felt something was looking at them. In my artwork, there are two observers; the magnifying glass and the person who will be looking at my electrons.
The electron structures crafted in Styrofoam representing a wave and a particle are a parallel to the wave and particle theory. The electrons were given human characteristics to show they have the potential to make decision. According to the double slit experiment, the electrons had the ability to change behaviour when it felt it was being watched. Since the electron can decide when to change their behaviour they must have some kind of intelligence. I gave eyes to my creation because they must have a way to detect the observer. Both electrons in my artwork are not particles because I want to show that quantum has limitless possibilities and does not obey specific rules. I had my electron representing the particle say “Hey they’re looking here. Why are you still a wave?” I chose this quote to show that one of them is not in the expected behaviour.
