The art project I have created is a painting of cartoons which depicts an aspect of the Quantum theory. The project consists of 3 cardboards which have images on them. The first one is a cartoon of a simple room; however the furniture in the room has eyes and mouths. They are talking to eachother and the television says “The humans finally left…now it’s party time!” This shows that once we leave a room, anything could be happening. We are not there to observe therefore there is no possible way of knowing the truth. Also, the couch says “Do you think they have any idea what goes on when they’re not watching? …Nah!” This is referring to us, the humans. It shows how the furniture could only be fooling us when we’re in the room. This idea is similar to the cartoon about the cows which stand on two legs but when a car passes by, they all go back on four legs. This is the message I am trying to convey through the artwork, and the following two cardboards have the same message. One of them is an eye open and inside the eye we see the world and it reads “The way we see the world” and the next cardboard is the world and in the world there is a closed eye which reads “isn’t always the way the world sees us…” Basically, what I’m trying to say through these drawings is that we have a certain vision of the world which we do not question, however there is a possibility that the world around us isn’t really what it seems to be. The furniture seems to be lifeless, however we never know what happens when we are not observing. Also, the eye has the world in it, which is a symbol for our vision of the world, but the other eye which is closed and encircled by the earth, suggests that maybe it is the world that is watching us, and not vice-versa.
The fact of not observing relates to the Quantum theory when we speak about electron behaviour. It is said that electrons have wave-particle duality. During the double slit experiment, scientists discovered that when shooting electron particles through two slits, they created an interference pattern on the screen on the other side, which is a wave property. To understand this behaviour, they put a measuring device near one of the slits. However, to their amazment, just by the act of observing, the electrons started acting like particles and creating the image of the 2 slits on the screen. This phenomenon remains a great mystery to the world of science. The fact that the electron behaves differently when being watched makes one question what could possibly be happening when we are not watching? This art project makes one think about the possibilities. What happens when we are not around? How could we know the truth about the world? In the end, there is no way of bein certain. Most people devote their whole life to finding the truth but I agree with Albert Einstein when he says, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
