My art project is a drawn scene of the limitation of human’s perception about scientific models on light, which is known as the wave-particle duality. I tried to contain and resume all principles about the light duality theory and human’s limited perception on a paper in order to make a creative art project.
First of all, we see the ‘light’ in the center. This image is what people think of when they try to imagine ‘light’ in their head, even though that image is simply a representation of light. In fact, this image is what we think how a ‘light’ looks like in way that human can understand. The light, in center, is being observed by magnifiers and scientists, who try to prove it more precisely and scientifically.
Then, there are magnifiers. They symbolize ‘human’s limited perception’. Humans tend to understand everything in a way that seems to be logical and understandable, which is known as perception. Even if the reality might be different, humans tend to only believe that can be explained scientifically in their head. That’s why people can not escape from the ‘limited perception’ of humans because once the perception is stuck in the head, they can not see other thing differently other than their own ‘truthful, logical and understandable’ way.
Also, we see 2 scientist who observe the light through the magnifier, one at the left and one in the middle. The one at the left represent the scientists who thought light was a wave before the particle theory came out. By their scientific experiments, they found out that light definitely has properties of a wave. So, without doubt, they believed the light is a wave. That’s when the 2nd scientist steps up to surprise the world, Albert Einstein. This famous scientist proved that the light also has properties of a particle, which he proved by the famous photoelectric effect experiment. However, even Einstein is limited in human’s perception because his scientific explanation is also a theory, meaning we can never actually know how the light looks like.
Finally, we see at the right, the magnifier without any scientist. It represents a possibility of a new theory that might surprise the world once again like the way Albert Einstein did. Since we are limited by our perception, we can not imagine the light other than a wave or a particle. Because of the theory of duality of wave-particle, humans tend to limit themselves from the possibility of a new theory. However, in the future, a brilliant scientist might step up with a new theory to break the duality theory of light. However, the new theory is also simply a theory, meaning it’s just a theory that explains the light in another way. So, even with the new theory, human can not escape from the perception.
