Quantum theory is something that cannot be explained and understood briefly. It defies common sense. Different aspects can be seen as different things to different people.
Erwin Schrödinger was a physicist that thought of an experiment that relates to quantum theory. The experiment is a thought that a cat was put in a box with a toxic substance sealed in a container that could be broken . The whole point of the Schrödinger's Cat experiment is that it makes people realize that there might be alternate universes. When the cat is in the box it is alive and dead at the same time. When the box is opened in one universe the cat might be dead and in another universe the cat might alive. This thought experiment relates to the quantum theory. This theory inspired me to create an art project. To mimic the cat in the box I created a image in my head, instead of using a cat why not another animal? How do we know what a cat really is? Can a rabbit be a cat? This theory has already been brought up by the artist Magritte who uses paintings and words to see that paintings and words are just representations of the object itself.
Using these two different sources I created a final product. I decided to do a painting on a canvas using acrylic paint, because it's more familiar to me. The painting presents a magician on a big stage. The most famous magic trick is pulling a rabbit from a top hat, so the rabbit acts as Schrödinger's Cat in the painting. In one universe, the rabbit can be pulled out alive, and in another universe the rabbit can be pulled out dead. Two rabbits are shown in the box to represent both universes, but there is really only one rabbit. At the bottom I wrote "This is Schrödinger's Cat" like Magritte showing that paintings and other objects are representations of the actual thing itself. To background of the painting is also important in showing the role of quantum theory. The magician is on stage which means that the magician is in front of an audience who are watching him. Eyes are focusing on the magic trick which, in quantum theory, can make particles act differently than without any audience. The lights on the stage represent light as a wave and particles. The quantum theory suggests that light rays are duality waves, which means they can act as both a wave and particles. Watching can make rays and who knows what else to behave differently.
The final art project that was given in was worked hard on and even though it is not the prettiest painting and the most precise I think that it is great. I think the colors made the painting more attractive. The message of quantum theory really comes across in the painting. The painting is a play on quantum and the different theories physicists and artists perceive of this theorem. Imagine being in a different dimension, one where everything is different, quantum theory can scare people easily because it's such a deep and uncommon thought.
