The world in which we're living in right now is a world where common sense reigns over everything. Every thing has to be proven; every action needs to be done for a specific purpose. The question one should ask is: What is common sense? Some may say it is the way in which people should think, in other words, it is the way people are expected to reason because otherwise, they are seen as strange. Quantum Theory defies what society calls common sense, and it does it in a way such that people constantly question it and try to find logic in it. However, Quantum is not logical and will probably never be. That's what makes it such a thought-provoking subject of interest.
The artwork I created is about the nonsense of Quantum Theory; it's about what one can't understand and accept easily. I chose to create a modified representation of the Magritte's Door painting. My artwork, a closed door through which one can see the Universe, reflects the nonsense of seeing something unexpected behind a door. When one looks at a closed door, it is impossible to know exactly what's behind it. We assume that what we think is behind the door also exists when it is closed, but in theory, we are just making assumptions and don't really know what's going on when our backs are turned. What happens behind the door between the moment it is closed and the moment someone opens it? During this short amount of time, is it possible that a totally different world is in action behind the door and that it suddenly takes back its normal appearance when the door is opened? This question will remain unexplained for it is impossible to really know the answer. My artwork represents a moment caught when a door is still closed, but it is as if an explosion caused it to have a big hole in it. This hole gives the observer the chance to catch a glimpse of what could happen behind a closed door. The artwork represents the unexpectedness of seeing something as big as the Universe behind a door. But what if this is what constantly happens when we leave a door closed? Asking a question like this just brings up the irrationality of this situation to our mind. As I said before, Quantum defies common sense; therefore, it defies what humans happen to think is rational. When the observer looks at my artwork, he shouldn't be thinking about how this situation could never occur in real life, but he should question himself on the fact that this could be happening. The door also represents the link between the universe we know as ours and the one the human brain can't understand.
As a final point, it is not easy to understand the link there could be between every day life and Quantum Theory, but there exists one. Magritte's Door representation is a situation in which instead of showing what people want to see, what they're used to see, the odd alternative is chosen. As if to create a doubt in the observer's mind, and that's what I wanted to create using my artwork. I wanted to make people question their sense of rationality. I wanted to make them think about the other side of life, the one that's often shaded by doors we often close ourselves.
