Indeed, quantum is a concept that can easily be described as a defiance of common sense. It goes against what we are accustomed to seeing and is therefore challenging to accept. Given the many theories that have preceded the notion of quantized things, such as Newtonian physics which displays continuity for instance, it has entailed many uncertainties and doubts.
The truth lies in the eyes of the beholder. This sentence is one of the ideas that came to mind when Quantum was first presented in class. Irrelevant of what textbooks insist or what teachers’ preach, the ultimate decision is up to us. This conclusion that we draw is referred to as our perception. This is where the vitality of the mirror comes into play in my artwork. My goal was to centralize the entire "decision making" theme and give the viewer a sense of responsibility and control in this process. I could have easily put a picture of myself, my teacher or Newton in the center; however that would have defeated the purpose of perception. A mirror is versatile, it reflects what it sees, as a result, by contemplating the artwork, the person is bound to come across their own reflection. Hopefully, this will incite them to develop their interpretation of the information that their eyes have encountered. As stated in the first draft rationale for this project, I wanted my artwork to focus on the importance of perception and how it differs from one person to another.
Furthermore, in order to give the viewer a multitude of possibilities, I made sure that the information displayed on the bristol board was varied. This is how the infinity symbols are relevant to the artwork. Basically, I incorporated opposite as well as complementary notions. For instance, Newton and Einstein are complementary pioneers of the sciences as they are both relating and contributing to quantum. Nonetheless, I also portrayed particle behaviour by the straight golden arrows opposing the wave diffraction at the left of the mirror. This duality is among the most complex and, at the same time, entertaining notions of this topic as it raises many opinions. This is in fact one of the concepts that lead me to not physically separate the different notions on the board. In other words, I did not want the opposites to repel each other on my presentation, I wanted them to be close in proximity in order to illustrate that they can indeed coexist. Hence, instead of putting an image of a dead cat and a live cat as seen by Schrodinger, I put a poster inferring to both possible outcomes at the same time (Wanted DEAD or ALIVE). Moreover, I tried to overcome this duality by directly superposing them on the board. For example, the electron was comprised of different line spectrums (representation of how light is quantized). On the other hand, this quantized depiction is leading to its polar opposite behaviour, continuity represented through the movement and the behaviour of light. In brief, since my ultimate goal was to compel the viewer to develop a judgement and an opinion of the information presented, I refrained from showing the commonly antagonistic effect that opposite notions seem to have towards one another. I made my artwork with an informative and forthcoming intent. Subsequently, I leaned towards compatibility and coexistence of the information.
Lastly, I wanted to link this project to the topics viewed in class. I added the troubling and deceiving idea of how most of what we study in science is merely a representation by adding the empty space at the far right of the board “This is not empty space”. In addition to this, as previously planned, I used a wooden support to display my artwork as it refers to the paintings studied in class depicting how everything in general is nothing but a representation and reality is sometimes hard to define.
In conclusion, in terms of the materials and the colours used, I made sure that the sense were being triggered trough my artwork. In brief, I used 3D representations, cotton balls as well as flashy colours and sparkles to incite the viewers to interact with the information they are being exposed to.
