Well…
Now we know why scientists are wondering what light really is. It behaves like a wave and a particle. But there is another thing in the world of science that really becomes “mind boggling”. No one really knows what an electron is, all the possibilities are just that, possibilities, theories that scientists can explain, but cannot fully prove, because every assumption is really a representation of what things at the atomic level might be.
What do we know, it maybe that there is absolutely nothing at the atomic level, whatever we think we know is just what we think we know.
My project
We need to understand that the concept of chemistry and quantum mechanics specifically, really explain what is in the atomic and the subatomic level of our universe, but are simply representation of what we believe is there. The perception of what is and what isn’t, is what scientists have been trying to figure out. The identification of light for example is a great mystery, because we don’t know if light is formed of waves or particles, we just know speculations of why it may be a wave or a particle, according to Thomas Young’s Double-Slit Experiment and Einstein’s Photoelectric Effect.
Since it is all a representation of what might be there, we cannot reject the possibility of there being absolutely nothing.
My project consists of a painting displaying light coming out of IRONMAN’s hand, being observed at the atomic level. Three holes are made in the canvas. A movable secondary canvas is placed behind the first canvas. When the secondary canvas is stationary at one spot, we see electrons as particles through the holes. When the secondary canvas is shifted once, we see electrons as waves through the holes. Now electrons and waves are just representations.
Knowing that during the double slit experiment, one electron goes through two slots at the same time while being observed from far away, but it does not do the same when being observed at a close distance. This tells us that electrons choose when and how to behave. We may conclude by this that electrons may be something totally different, quite possible something living that act upon their own judgment of the situation. By taking a comical approach of quantum mechanics I set the third option to be part of a magical world, therefore when the secondary canvas is shifted a second time, through the holes we see my interpretation of what electrons might be. Tinker Bell is a magical creature, a fairy, created by Walt Disney; she is a fairy who exerts power and energy. As a third theory to what light really is, I believe that Tinker Bell is the little creature who gives out energy, that is how she can decide when to go through the double slit and when not to. It is simply a theory that cannot be proven, but since quantum mechanics is based on representation, we can take a comical approach to explain some of the characteristics of light.
The back ground is black, so that the bright colour of light can be seen clearly as well as the electrons. Questions may arise upon the use of IRONMAN in the art project. There is no specific reason for IRONMAN’s presence. I just like IRONMAN. And since Tony Stark is a scientist experimenting on different types of energy, it is a great way to represent quantum mechanics.
Basically the electrons in the painting are placed in a hole that shows what is on the secondary canvas in the back. As the canvas is shifted, the electrons shift from becoming a particle, a wave and then Tinker Bell. That is what we need to understand, that we do not fully know what is, and what isn’t.
It has changed the way I see the world, it is so MIND-BOGGLING!
