When I was asked to make a piece of art about something that I was interested in this year in chemistry, I had no idea what to do. Then when I started really thinking I realized the electron was one of the things that interested me the most. This Particle is interesting to me because of how mysterious it is. Throughout the numerous years even the best scientists were unable to explain this particle precisely and that’s what makes it so special in my eyes. My artwork has two different things that have a reason for them. First I have the e-, which as we know is the symbol for the electron, and the second thing I will explain the reason for is the base of my project, which is a mirror.
The first rationale is that of the e-. The e- is a symbol we use in science to represent an electron; we use this sign at all times in our labs in our notes and sometimes we use it in conversation too. If someone would show us this symbol and ask us what it was 99% of us would probably laugh and say it is an electron. When we think about this we realize that we are idiots, this e- is not an electron, it is possibly the furthest thing from an electron. We need to realize that even though we use this sign in all of our notebooks and labs it is really far from being an electron. An electron is really a particle that even the worlds best known scientists like Bohr, Rutherford, and even Einstein were completely confused by and couldn’t explain and understand fully.
The second part of my rationale for this project is the mirror, which was used as a base for my e-. At the start I was not planning on making this my base but when I went to buy something to place my e- on I saw this mirror and I thought that it was a very good idea for the following reason. At the beginning I learned in high school that the electron was just a simple particle, which was negatively charged, and it was part of the composition of each element, but after I furthered my studies in chemistry, in college I learned that the electron is far more complicated than I previously learned. As I previously mentioned the electron is a particle that many scientists were very shocked by and couldn’t understand. Some of them even spent they’re entire lifetime studying this astonishing phenomenon with no answer to the many questions that can be asked about it. When we enter a room and there are many mirrors in this room, the room feels much bigger than it really is. It was the same with the electron and me. I believed that it was small and simple, when in reality it’s bigger than it looks and much more complex than I believed.
When I first learned we were going to have this art project I wasn’t happy because I didn’t have any ideas, I knew I wasn’t creative, and I really thought I wasn’t going to enjoy doing this project. I was wrong, after I got my idea even though it took some time I must admit I enjoyed doing this project. This project also made me realize that even though we should understand the science we learn in class it is also very important to realize that the things we learn in class are as far as we can go with a pen and paper but science isn’t only on paper you must also apply it in real life and you must make changes to convert what you learn in class to what really exists in real life.
