Today everyone is looking for the secret to live longer and to fight the process of aging. My research portrays the role of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in aging. These are very unstable and reactive free radicals that can damage living cells and generate diseases. Normally the body makes natural antioxidants which detoxify the free radicals. However, the rate of elimination of ROS is much lower than the rate of production of these free radicals. This creates an imbalance which is called the oxidative stress. Therefore, to minimize the impact of this imbalance, a person should introduce more antioxidants in the body in the form of fruits. Studies show that some fruits and vegetables are very rich in antioxidants. An antioxidant is a molecule that ends the chain started by the free radicals by donating one of its electrons. Moreover, it is also essential to protect ourselves from pollution and UV radiation. To portray my research, I decided to make a painting that summarizes everything I learned. In my point of view, only painting could allow me to integrate various colors to express my ideas. Therefore, I used a canvas and acrylic paint in order to achieve my goal. In my painting, I showed two different lifestyles. One was portrayed by the woman, eating fruits which are good sources of antioxidants and protecting herself from the UV rays. This is shown as the good lifestyle that everyone should adopt in order to stay young forever. I used bright colors such as red and yellow to catch the observer's eye. Also, the bright colors represent life at the woman's side with the tree beside her. The other lifestyle was portrayed by the man. In the painting, the man is smoking and directly exposed to the UV rays. This lifestyle is not to ideal because of all the diseases it can generate such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and inflammation. In fact, in my image, I also showed inflammation in the man's arm as a result of excessive smoking and exposure to UV radiation. This also causes the man to age, which is shown by drawing several wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes. On the other hand, the woman is shown to have perfect skin because of her lifestyle. Moreover, in the background, I painted a factory releasing a lot of smoke causing pollution. Notice how the factory is situated in the back of the man's side. Hence, my artwork represents a comparison between two lifestyles and their outcomes. It is a message for people to adopt the right one in order to stay young and prevent lethal diseases. Furthermore, it is essential to understand organic chemistry because it very much present in our everyday life. For example, medicine and drugs are very important in today's society. However, it is essential to understand how they work. Stereochemistry plays an important role in drugs, for instance if it is understood incorrectly it can be deadly.
