My artwork piece is in the setting of a garden, where there is a large hand block the middle of the flower. The hand is covering the eye of an observer. Another flower beside it has not been covered and it has its eye not covered and there for represents the observer in Quantum physics. Behind the flowers, there is a rainbow running along the sky. Where there is an observer the light is acting like a particle and where there is no observer the light is acting like a wave. This represents the wave-particle duality, which is that all matter and light exhibits both wave and particle properties, depending on the circumstances like the addition of the observer changes the outcome of the matter.
The large hand is place just above the head of a small girl; I felt that it was necessary to add in two realities in the painting. The larger person and smaller person represent the possibility of two universes taking place at the same time, and the concept of parallel universes. The study of quantum physics began in the 1900's, when the physicist Max Planck first introduced the concept to the scientific world. Planck's study of radiation presented some unusual findings that contradicted classical physical laws. These findings suggested that there are other laws at work in the universe, operating on a deeper level than we know. Questions came up like why does quantum matter behave so erratically, and one of the answers was because of parallel universes. Theses universes are related to ours, because they branch off from ours, and our universe is branched off of another universe. The difference between our universe and another is that our extinct species may still be alive in another universe, it is little differences that make the universes branch off from each other. Quantum theory suggest the possibility of parallel universes, so I believed it was important to show in my painting that humans can be larger than plants and flowers, or in another universe the same size and live within the nature, instead of over powering it, also it the painting represents the two universes living simultaneously.
I did a painting for my artwork because I have painted in the past and I find it is a very soothing process. During this period of the school year it can be very stressful, so doing a project that was relaxing was nice and I really looked forward to doing it, and I really enjoyed the process. When I was assigned this project I was going to do a model of the relative universe that Einstein uncovered, but after much deliberation I decided it would not contain enough pop or enough different ideas of science. My second option was to create a person reaching down in a garden to pick a flower where there was a smaller person. Again after much more thinking and ideas from my teacher I realized it did not contain enough ideas and theories of science. I loved the idea so much that I decided to keep it but only grow on it more, my teacher told me I had a very Alice in Wonderland theme to my idea, and I realized he was correct, and that I should embrace it. When I think of Alice In Wonderland, I think of the bright colors and the rabbit with the clock always saying he is late. This all reminded me that clocks positioned farther away from the mass of the earth run faster than clocks closer to the earth. This was perfect I could now place another scientific theory in my painting while staying in a theme. I put in the rabbit with the clock in my painting and the larger higher hand with a watch, both with different times to capture the science part of the painting.
It was really important for my painting to have a theme, because the last thing I wanted to do was place a bunch of scientific theories, and studies in one canvas without any reason and call it art. I think the project was to really understand science in a creative way and represent it in art without just copying the exact experiment the scientist did, or drawing exactly what another artist did but changing only one factor. Art should be combining different things together to make one unity painting that can be seen as a whole and contains small details that scream science. I really think my painting captures this because it contains different ideas covered in class, but does so in a creative original way, that has never been seen before. The setting is mystical and filled with color and imagination, it is fun to look at and educational at the same time.
